Extending Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning for another three years made absolutely no sense.
Benning has been a colossal disaster. Not rebuilding. Not making the playoffs.
Comedy hour.
So why did he get extended?
The obvious answer is -- Brock Boeser.
Boeser is the only talent on the Canucks.
Take him off Horvat line, Horvat goes tits up.
Props up Elias Pettersson, helps him at least get assists down the stretch, saving Pettersson from complete embarrassment.
There's Boeser and some guys.
Boeser knows it.
Anyone with half a brain knows it.
He's a $10 million player.
He's Mike Bossy waiting for Brian Trottier to arrive (and he hasn't).
So all Boeser has to do is wait it out.
He waits until the team falls flat on its ass in October and November and Benning is fired and a real GM is brought in.
The counter point? Give Benning a contract. It at least lets the Boeser camp know that "we're invested in this ... guy.."
Now we all know they'll fire Benning with 3 years left, no problem.
But it at least gives the Boeser camp a possible counter point.
We MIGHT keep Benning and out wait you - even when this team falls flat on its ass.
Remember Boeser's linemates in college?
No one does.
Caguila and some other guy who I think are still in the NHL..... Chicago I think.
Boeser is the talent on the Canucks.
Forget Pettersson. Pettersson is for the dorks. Dorks who sniff jocks.
Reality check: Pettersson had 2 violent injuries and is one concussion from game over.
Boeser's brain is fine.
Boeser looks every bit the thoroughbred when he plays.
But the reality is you can't have him setting up Pettersson.
Boeser is the trigger man.
And if you get Boeser propping up Pettersson- Pettersson will take the cash.
And so if you're Boeser... you just wait it out.
There's no downside for him.
All the Canucks can do is say well, we're prepared to wait too.
Fat chance.

The NHL figured the Pettersson out.
They already have Horvat figured out (thus not 30 goals and 40 assists... ever, which for a "1st line center" is horrific.
They don't have any centers.
That's an issue.
Ferland - came to Vancouver to retire. Benched in Carolina.
Tyler Myers - came to Vancouver to retire. Benched in Winnipeg. Not a point producer. Not good in his own zone. Not mean. Not really anything.
JT Miller was a joke. But no, it was real. They traded probably the 1st overall pick for a 3rd line winger. (oh, I know, he had SOOOOO much talent ahead of him in Tampa). That's why he's been traded twice.
Quinton Hughes !! He's Bobby Orr. Lol. Yeah, right.
Hughes won't be playing past game 10 when it becomes obvious what was obvious to the manager who passed over Hughes in the NHL draft - he's 5'7" and 160 pounds.
If you think he can actually play defense (which is his actual job) then you smoke a TON of pot.
Can't play defense. It showed in his brief appearances in Vancouver last year. Terrible on defense. Turnstiled. Confused. Out of his league.
If Green doesn't make the playoffs he's fired. If Green and Benning are 10 points out of the playoffs by November - he's fired.
Thus Hughes won't be playing past game 10 if Green has his way. Even if Hughes did play -- did you forget he has a muffin for a shot ??? Can't play on the PP if you can't shoot the puck. They'll just let him shoot all day long and laugh.
Period. End of story.
The Canucks are a shit show on full display.
They needed to sign centers and draft centers.
They didn't.

Canucks passed over Dobson to take the diminutive Hughes to please the analytic pencil dicks.
Runner up - Kappo Kakko - New York Rangers (oh, you hated the draftists, didn't you? But if they had got in the game they might have got a player in the 2016-19 drafts).

One of the reasons (of many) why I hated Wally Boner sorry Buono was because he intimidated the BC Lions media.
He thought it was the media's job to sit around and blow smoke up his ass and the team's ass.
Well, now look at them! How'd that work?
Signing a 34-year-old quarterback? That was the grand plan? It's the CFL. There are no good quarterbacks in the CFL. And don't you think that by 1-4 someone might have asked... WHO IS THE BACKUP QUARTERBACK IN BC AND WHY ISN'T HE PLAYING ??? Do you think??? They keep running the old fart out there... Not a single media member has suggested or asked.... hey, what about the backup quarterback?
It's not the media's role to sit around and blow smoke up Buono's or Benning's or Mark De Sintos (Whitecraps) arse.
It's the media's role to be critical.
When you lose that ability - well, you get what you deserve.
No one was critical of President Barack Obama. You got Hillary Clinton - you got Trump.
